Life in India's 1st digital nomad village

Hello from Yaakten!

It's been a week since I came to this village in Sikkim which we're transforming into India's first digital nomad village.

Life here is quite simple.

I have a minimal, comfortable & functional room with a work desk and hot shower.

Wifi is fast - one of the best I've found in the mountains in 4 years of travelling and having it in this remote village in Sikkim is unbelievable.

Weather is lovely, monsoon is in full swing. Not too hot, not too cold, just how I like it.

Locals are very sweet - I take a walk, go to any house and they always make me sit for chai or food.

Scenary is a treat to the eyes, beautiful misty mountains, pine trees, colourful flowers and green all around. A lot of plum trees so I'm plucking and eating fresh plum. Never knew they could be so sweet and juicy :P

Basic homemade food that the locals cook but since they eat a lot of meat & eggs, I'm eating almost the same food every day - rice, dal, beans, spinach, aloo, bhindi. They make veg local food like momo, chowmein if I ask but I try to eat healthy. It's tough for me to ensure good protein intake now. I hear living here is a treat for people who eat non-veg though :D

The villagers also make plum, guava & rhododendron wine and on some nights, we chill together sipping on homemade wine.

We don't have any shops around yet. The nearest market is 30 min away so getting fruits & veggies is a little challenging but we're hoping to set up a pop shop in the village soon.

Making the village resourceful is a work in progress and that's what I like about it right now - getting to see it being built for remote workers from the ground up and being a part of this innovation.

I also get a lot of time with myself and it has its pros & cons. As more people start coming, I'm sure the lonliness will go away and I'll probably crave for space again. Jo milta hai usme kabhi khushi nahi hoti insan ko :P

But I took a pause today. Poured myself a glass of hot water and sat outside looking at the tall pine trees covered by fresh mist as the clouds made their way over the Sun, and imagined.

I imagined the 25-year-old Kanak. What did she dream her future life would be like? It didn't seem like sipping hot water in the mountains in Sikkim was even a distant dream. And the little little things that consume my thoughts every day seemed so silly with this thought. Because for the 25-year-old Kanak, I've already made it.

And so have you, for the 25-year-old you.

This thought made me happy today.

Hello from Yaakten! If you've missed the last few emails, this is a remote village in Sikkim where we're building India's first digital nomad village. I've been here for 3 weeks. At first everything was exciting - the fresh mountain air, the lovely weather, the kindness of villagers, the stillness. But as the days passed, the quiet started to feel a little too quiet.I found myself craving for some company. Someone I could sit, laugh and talk about life with. Not just company but connection....

Hello from Sikkim! I arrived here at midnight yesterday after a long, treacherous 26-hour journey. From west India (Rajasthan) to east India (Sikkim) by taking a train, a flight and 2 cabs. Then, I woke up to the sound of rain and this view And just like always, the destination felt worth the painful journey. I'm here on an exciting new project. We're building India's 1st Digital Nomad Village. When I first came across their ad on IG, I thought it was a scam. It seemed too good to be true. A...
